If a disposal can't be repaired economically, we'll tell you honestly and explain your options.

Many disposals have a hex socket on the bottom; turn it back and forth with the matching wrench to free a jam.
Never put your hand inside the disposal. Use tongs to remove objects.
Run cold water while grinding, and avoid grease, bones and fibrous peels.
Let a factory-trained technician take care of it. We'll diagnose the problem, give you an upfront price and use OEM parts whenever available. Safety first: always turn off power to the disposal before reaching near it, and never put your hand into the grinding chamber.

Humming usually means the motor is getting power but the flywheel is jammed. Turn off the power, press the reset button and try freeing the jam with the hex wrench on the bottom. If it still hums, the motor may be seized.
Most disposals have a small red reset button on the bottom of the unit under the sink. Press it after the motor has cooled for a few minutes.
Leaks at the sink flange or hose connections can usually be repaired. A leak from the bottom of the unit often means internal seals have failed, and replacement is typically the better option.
Avoid grease and oil, bones, fruit pits, eggshells in large amounts, coffee grounds in large amounts, and fibrous foods like celery and corn husks.
